Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana develops mentors committed to helping boys and girls grow into the next generation of caring, competent, and confident adults.  This one-to-one mentoring program is built upon nationally recognized research and practices that honor and value the wide range of developmental needs of boys and girls as well as the diversity of their communities. 

Youth served are between the ages of 8 and 18 in Marion, Hamilton and Johnson counties and are enrolled in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana program between the ages of 8-14. Mentoring relationships are supported by BBBSCI until the youth reaches the age of 18 or graduates from high school. 

Being a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable things you will ever do.  It's simple, too. You and your "Little" can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.  There are two ways to get involved: community-based or site-based.  Community based matches meet each other in the community and do things such as shooting hoops; playing a board game; going on a hike; enjoying a pizza; or learning to cook a new dish.  Site-based matches meet at the Little’s school and do fun activities while sharing lunch or recess together. 

Gift of Time: There is a one-year commitment from all mentors.  Mentors in the community-based program are required to spend 2 to 4 hours, twice a month, with their Little.  Mentors in the site-based program are required to spend 1 hour per week with their Little.

Training: All volunteers go through an interview process before they are enrolled, followed by a Mentoring 101 training course.  In addition to the training, each match is assigned a Match Support Specialist who provides guidance and support for both the Big and the Little through the entire match relationship.
